Choosing the Right Flowering Plants for Your Texas Landscape
Hi friends,
Spring is here, and there’s nothing more rewarding than watching your garden come back to life! If you're looking to add a pop of color and function to your yard this season, choosing the right flowering plants is a great place to start. But with so many beautiful options out there, how do you know which ones are best for your space?
At Poole’s Lawn here in Lewisville, we love helping homeowners find plants that not only look amazing but also work hard for their landscapes. When choosing flowering plants, I recommend keeping four things in mind: Location, Function, Bloom Season, and Lifespan. Let’s break that down a bit and explore some great options to bring beauty—and even a few extra benefits—to your garden this year.
Mosquito-Repelling Geranium
Mosquito-Repelling Plants
We all know that with warmer weather comes one unwelcome guest—mosquitos! Luckily, Mother Nature gives us some beautiful ways to keep them at bay. Geraniums are a favorite of mine—not just because of their color, but also because of their unique scent that mosquitoes don’t love.
Other great mosquito-fighting options include:
- Marigold
- Lemon Balm
- Catmint
- Rosemary
- Sage
- Basil
Plant these in containers on the patio or tuck them into your garden beds to enjoy the added benefit of pest protection all season long.

Bee & Butterfly Friendly Salvia Greggii
Flowering Sub-Shrubs
Want something that offers more structure but still blooms beautifully? Look into flowering sub-shrubs. These are perennial woody plants that stay relatively small and bushy, making them perfect for foundation plantings or mixed borders.
One of my favorites is Salvia Greggii. It comes in a variety of colors, thrives in North Texas heat, and keeps blooming for months. Other excellent choices include:
- Lavender – fragrant and bee-friendly
- Bat Face Cuphea – uniquely shaped blooms that add charm and attract pollinators
These plants are low-maintenance, water-wise, and a great way to anchor your garden design with color.
Tender Perennial - Gerbera Daisy
Perennial Flowers
Perennials are the gift that keeps on giving. Most go dormant during the winter but surprise us with fresh growth in spring—just when we need a little pick-me-up.
Pictured above is the Gerbera Daisy and let me tell you—these "tender perennials" have really shown their toughness in our Texas gardens over the last few years. Their cheerful blooms come in every color under the sun, and trust me, it’s hard to stop at just one!
When selecting perennials, look for ones suited to our local climate and make sure to pair them with well-draining soil and good sun exposure.
Whether you're planting a few containers for your front porch or refreshing an entire garden bed, I hope this gives you a little inspiration and direction. If you need help designing your seasonal beds or choosing the right plants for your space whether you’re in Lewisville, The Colony, Little Elm, Flower Mound, or Highland Village, you know where to find us – tell us where to find you!
Wishing you a colorful, blooming spring season,
