Summer Lawn Care Tips That Make Sense in Texas

Summer Lawn Care Tips That Make Sense in Texas

Summer in Southern Denton County doesn’t pull any punches. One week we’re enjoying cool rain showers and green lawns, and the next we’re bracing for scorching sun and dry winds. If you’ve lived here long enough, you know - it’s all part of the Texas charm.

Just like we adjust our routines to stay healthy during the summer (hello, SPF and iced tea), your landscape needs a little seasonal care too. And with the right approach, your lawn and garden can thrive all summer long.

Plants That Can Take the Heat

One of my personal favorites for this climate is Texas Sage—it’s tough as nails when the soil dries out, but don’t be surprised when it bursts into beautiful purple blooms after a stretch of humidity or rain. It’s a show-stopper!

Red Yucca is another drought-tolerant gem. Low maintenance, striking flowers, and it practically thrives on neglect (a win-win).

And let’s not forget Holly Shrubs, they’re a reliable evergreen foundation for any landscape and hold up beautifully throughout the year.

Mulch is Your Garden's Best Friend

I can’t say this enough - mulch, mulch, mulch! We love shredded hardwood mulch for its natural appearance, moisture retention, and soil-boosting benefits. Mulch acts like sunscreen and a water bottle for your plants. It helps regulate soil temps and slows down evaporation, which is critical in summer heat.

Apply a thick layer at least once a year - or lightly in the spring and fall if you’re swapping out flowers. Your plants will thank you for it. If you’re interested in having Poole’s Lawn & Landscape provide you with an estimate on mulching your yard, get in touch! We’ll be happy to help!

Water Smart - Not Hard

Here’s my number one tip: Hand water when you can, especially in problem spots or with new plantings. Sprinkler systems are great tools, and they’re most effective when you control them and not a timer. Watch the weather, feel the soil, and adjust as needed.

With the rain we just had, our soil was nice and saturated. But we all know what happens next; dry spells and 90+ temps. That quick transition can stress out even established plants, so monitor your lawn carefully as the ground dries out.

Bottom Line

A little seasonal care goes a long way. Treat your landscape like you treat yourself - keep it hydrated, protected, and nurtured - and it’ll reward you with beauty all summer long.

Stay cool out there!
